Loons’ Rincon Wins Home Run Derby

MIDLAND – The 2017 Midwest League All-Star activities kicked off Monday with the Home Run Derby taking place at Dow Diamond, with Loons’ Carlos Rincon winning in front of his home crowd.

The West Michigan Whitecaps’ Josh Lester led things off before the rain hit. Lester hit four home runs before the home run derby was suspended due to weather.

Once things resumed and numerous home runs later, Great Lakes Loons’ right fielder Rincon faced Lansing Lugnuts’ third basemen Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round. Carlos Rincon emerged victorious with a whopping 20 home runs in the final round to win the Home Run Derby.

The All-Star Game features many in-state players participating.  Justin Maese, Geno Encina, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette, will be representing the Lansing Lugnuts, with Gregory Soto, Austin Sodders, Jason Foley, Blaise Salter, Josh Lester and Jake Robson representing the West Michigan White Caps while Dustin May and Keibert Ruiz will be representing the Great Lakes Loons.

The All Star Game takes place Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Dow Diamond.
