Shepherd Preps for D3 State Semis

The Shepherd softball team has a chance to keep competing for its first state championship since 1978.

The unranked Bluejays, who have already taken down the No. 8 and No. 4 teams in the state, respectively, are set to take on the No. 1 Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in the Division 3 state semifinals Friday at Michigan State.

Junior pitcher Haley Peska, who tossed a perfect game in Tuesday’s 5-0 quarterfinal win over No. 4 Millington, is excited with how far the Bluejays (25-18) have come.

“It’s crazy. It’s so cool,” Peska said. “It’s awesome and feels so good.”

Shepherd will take on the defending state champions, who have won back-to-back state titles in Division 3. Monroe St. Mary is ranked No. 1 in the state. The Falcons defeated Grosse Pointe Woods University in the quarterfinal, 5-0.

Despite being the underdog, senior left fielder Hannah Cluley doesn’t see the road ending.

“This is incredible. I can’t explain it. It’s awesome,” she said. “It’s a good way to end it, but we’re going to keep going.”

First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.
