Inland Lakes Shuts Out Kalamazoo Christian in State Semis

Posted:

EAST LANSING – Powered by 14 hits, including a pair of home runs, the top-ranked Inland Lakes softball program cruised to a 9-0 win over perennial power Kalamazoo Christian in a MHSAA Division 4 state semifinal at Michigan State on Friday.

The win means the Bulldogs (34-5) will play for the Division 4 state championship for a second straight year. Inland Lakes dropped a 1-0 game to Unionville-Sebewaing Area in last year’s title contest.

Inland Lakes opened the scoring early, plating three runs on three hits and a trio of fielding errors by the Comets in the top of the first inning.

The Bulldogs maintained a 3-0 lead through four innings before Madison Milner drilled a two-run home run, scoring ace Cloe Mallory, who reached earlier on a double to right field.

Inland Lakes tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth and one in the seventh on a solo home run by Makayla Henckel.

Sydney DePauw led Inland Lakes at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Mallory, Milner, Vanessa Wandrie and Pamela Braund all tallied two hits apiece.

Mallory allowed four hits while striking out nine and walking four in a complete-game effort.

Kalamazoo Christian ends its season at 24-18.

Inland Lakes now awaits the winner of No. 5 Coleman and No. 8 Ottawa Lake Whiteford. Saturday’s state final is set for 3 p.m.
