Petoskey wrestling program honors two of its own

PETOSKEY – The Petoskey wrestling program honored two of its own Wednesday night as part of a Big North Conference tri-meet with Traverse City Central and West.

Donning orange and gray singlets, the Northmen raised money for the Petoskey Family Fund as well the families of Darby Walker and Carl VanderWall through t-shirt, bracelet and car decal sales.

A sibling of a former Petoskey wrestler, Darby Walker, 16, is currently battling leukemia, while Carl VanderWall, a volunteer coach with the wrestling program, is fighting brain cancer.

“The Petoskey Family Fund donates proceeds to families that are in need due to medical emergencies or medical events,” VanderWall said. “The gray tonight represents brain cancer and the orange represents leukemia. Leukemia and brain cancer have affected the Petoskey community in the last year.”

As for the action on the mat, Petoskey swept the meet, winning 37-34 over West and 51-27 over Central.
