REMUS – As the dual wrestling season comes to a conclusion this weekend, Chippewa Hills has its sights set on claiming the school’s first state championship.
After reaching the state semifinals for the first time since 2007 a year ago, the second-seeded Warriors (39-1) are making their fifth appearance in as many years in the state quarterfinals Friday, facing seventh-seeded Gladstone (16-1) at Central Michigan’s McGuirk Arena at 4 p.m.
In addition to earning its fifth straight regional championship this year with wins over Shepherd and sixth-ranked Caro, Chippewa Hills racked up dual victories in January over New Lothrop and Hudson, which have combined to win the last seven Division 4 state championships.
"I think of it as just another dual meet,” said senior 140-pounder Slade Todd on the state quarterfinals. “We still have to attack, we still have to wrestle hard.”
A program already rich in tradition, Chippewa Hills believes a first-time appearance in the state finals this weekend would garner the program more respect.
“I feel like if we step it up another level, people would actually give us more respect than what we have,” said junior 135-pounder Austin Spedowski. “I think that we’re going to do our best, and hopefully make it to the finals this year."
