Gaylord Wrestling Preps for State Finals
GAYLORD – For the second consecutive year, the Gaylord wrestling program is headed back to the state finals.
A six-time defending district champion, the Blue Devils (41-1) enter Friday’s Division 2 state quarterfinals at Central Michigan’s McGuirk Arena as the third seed and will face seventh-seeded Warren Woods-Tower (26-6) at 6 p.m.
Gaylord made quick work of Bay City Central and Bay City John Glenn en route to claiming its sixth consecutive district title, then topped Escanaba and Flint Kearsley in the regional round.
Ranked first at 119 pounds, junior Dominic LaJoie, a 2014 Division 2 individual state champion at 103 pounds, believes Gaylord has its best shot at claiming its first state championship this weekend.
"Honestly, I think this is the best team we’ve ever had,” LaJoie said. “I think we have a shot to win it all."
After reaching the state semifinals for the first time a year ago, senior 145-pounder Tristan Blanzy says the Blue Devils are ready to take the next step.
"We’re only in the third year that Gaylord has been able to do that, and that’s an awesome thing,” Blanzy said. “We stick together, and I think we’ve got a really good shot at going as far as we can this year."
