Big Rapids Preps for First Breslin Center Appearance

BIG RAPIDS – For the first time school history, the Big Rapids boys basketball program finds itself on the state’s biggest stage.

With a 42-23 win over Essexville-Garber on Tuesday, the Cardinals (23-2) punched their ticket to the program’s first state semifinal appearance.

Big Rapids will face Stevensville Lakeshore in a Class B semifinal at Michigan State’s Breslin Center on Friday at 7:50 p.m.

The Lancers (19-7) pulled off a 51-45 overtime win against Hudsonville Unity Christian on Tuesday to reach their first semifinal since falling to Lansing Sexton in the 2012 Class B title game.

Friday marks Stevensville Lakeshore’s fifth appearance in the state semifinals and third since 2007.

With wins over Chippewa Hills, Clare, Reed City, Benzie Central and Sault Ste. Marie in the 2016 postseason, the Cardinals captured their fourth district title in five years and third regional championship in four years.

"I just like being able to represent our school and our city,” Big Rapids junior Christian Hector said. “Being the first team to do it is pretty special."
