Pine River Outlasts Big Rapids Crossroads in Season Opener

BIG RAPIDS – The Pine River softball team outlasted host Big Rapids Crossroads for a pair of wins Tuesday in the season opener for both schools. 

The Bucks opened with a 20-15 win and closed the evening with a 14-7 victory in the nightcap. 

Alexis Bennett picked up the win in the circle in the opener, allowing three hits and striking out 13. 

Kyla Johnson went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead Pine River. 

Cassie Cole was saddled with the loss, fanning four. 

In the nightcap, Dana Hill registered a win after allowing four hits and striking out five over five innings of work. 

Kourtney Brock led the way at the plate with two singles and three RBIs. 

Cole took the loss for the Cougars, striking out two. 

Ashley Benton recorded two singles for Crossroads. 

The Cougars are now off until April 11, when they conference play at Baldwin.

Pine River travels to Grant on Wednesday.
