TC West’s Cannon Commits to Notre Dame

Traverse City West sophomore volleyball all-stater Abryanna Cannon officially announced her college commitment earlier this week.

Upon visiting the University of Notre Dame on Monday, Cannon verbally committed to the South Bend, Ind., school.

"Honestly, there’s a lot of different reasons. One of them was the academics are outstanding,” Cannon said. “The coaches are amazing… the players are great, I got to spend a little time with them. It’s relatively close to my home, so my friends and family can come watch me if they want to.

“Volleyball is a big part of my life and Notre Dame has the capability to take me to the next level both academically and with volleyball."

A 6-1 outside hitter, Cannon says she’s relieved to have her college plans already settled.

"When I first committed I was very nervous because of the whole committing process, I felt like I had to go to college the next day,” Cannon said. “It’s a huge relief to have college paid for and know where I’m going so far in advance."

After leading West to a 2014 Class A regional final and a 2015 Class A quarterfinal appearance, Cannon has her sights set on guiding the program to its first state championship.

"Winning a state title would be insanely awesome but more importantly, to have a strong bond with your team is incredibly awesome,” she said. “You have those people that know exactly what you’re going through, with the struggles of juggling a sport and homework. One of my favorite things about volleyball is celebrating with them, because it’s not just something you do individually, it’s something we all do together."
