Boyne City Splits with Kalkaska, Claims LMC Title
BOYNE CITY – The Boyne City softball program captured an outright Lake Michigan Conference championship with a doubleheader split with visiting Kalkaska on Monday.
Needing the split to win the title outright, the Ramblers fell 5-4 in the nightcap before rallying for an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.
The title is Boyne City’s second in three years after sharing the 2014 league crown with Traverse City St. Francis.
In the opener, Taylor Kooistra delivered a three-run home run for the Blazers, while Makenzie Leach and Makenzie Wilkinson both chipped in with a pair of hits apiece.
Boyne City’s Katie Hoth led the Ramblers at the plate with two hits, including a two-run home run.
Leach also earned the win, striking out five over five innings of work.
Emma Shumaker took the loss, striking out four.
In the nightcap, Hoth once again paced Boyne City, tallying two hits, while Kooistra and Leach combined for four hits and two RBIs for Kalkaska.
Shumaker picked up the win, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out a game-high eight.
Wilkinson was saddled with the loss, allowing seven hits while fanning four.
