Gaylord’s Martin Signs with CMU

GAYLORD – Gaylord senior wrestler Jon Martin signed his National Letter of Intent with Central Michigan University on Thursday.

Martin led Gaylord to two of its most successful season in program history over the last two years, guiding the Blue Devils to back-to-back appearances in the MHSAA Division 2 team state semifinals.

“I think around sixth or seventh grade, I made my mind up I wanted to wrestle Division I, so I just kept working for that goal,” Martin said. “I have a lot of support from Gaylord, and I’m just super thankful for everything. I’ve always wanted to go to Central, so it’s pretty exciting for me and I’m looking forward to going there next year.”

At 130 pounds, Martin also claimed a runner-up finish at the 2016 MHSAA Division 2 individual state finals and finished fifth at 125 pounds at the 2015 Division 2 finals.

He closed out his prep career with 205 wins and was a four-time medalist at the individual state finals.

Martin joins a CMU program that has long been the class of the Mid-American Conference, claiming 13 regular season conference championships and 16 league tournament titles.
