Ogemaw Heights Grad Zettel Signs with Detroit Lions

A dream has become a reality for West Branch native and Penn State defensive lineman Anthony Zettel.

A former three-sport athlete at Ogemaw Heights, Zettel was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of 2016 NFL Draft this past weekend.

Zettel, who graduated in December, concluded his collegiate career ranked seventh all-time in Penn State history with 20 career sacks and 10th with 38 tackles for a loss.

A 2015 third team All-Big Ten selection, Zettel recorded 47 total tackles, including four sacks, as well as six pass breakups in his senior season.

The 6-4, 277-pound defensive lineman also led the Nittany Lions with 17 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and three interceptions during his junior campaign, earning first team All-Big Ten honors.

"Whenever you get the opportunity you just have to make the most of it,” said former Ogemaw Heights football coach Andrew Pratley. “There’s a lot of guys that never get that dream fulfilled and it’s certainly not the end of this story, it’s the beginning of another chapter.

“I’m very proud of where he has come and what he is going to continue to do and how he represents his family and his hometown."

During his prep career, Zettel led Ogemaw Heights to the 2009 Division 3 state semifinals, the furthest the program had advanced in the state playoffs since winning the Class BB state title in 1997.

"I think everybody is very excited that he was drafted and it’s great that he’s drafted by the Lions," Ogemaw Heights athletic director Will Robelli said. “We wish him the best and I hope he has great success with the Lions organization."

Zettel is the 14th Penn State athlete to be drafted by the Lions and first since Derrick Williams in 2009.

He will report to Lions rookie mini-camp on Thursday.
