Trio of Elk Rapids Seniors Announce College Commitments

ELK RAPIDS – With less than a month left before graduation, a trio of Elk Rapids senior student-athletes announced their college commitments on Monday.

Shae Somers (men’s basketball), Alexa Wagner (volleyball) and Montgomery Finch (track and field) will all continue their careers at NCAA Division III institutions

Somers, who will attend Trine (Ind.) University in the fall, is relieved to have concluded his college recruitment process.

“It’s a lot of stress off of my shoulders,” Somers said. “I had to wait a while to make a really good decision, and I’m just excited that I get to go play more. I felt welcome, and at home there, so that was the biggest thing for me."

Wagner will head east to Pennsylvania’s Summit University, where she also plans to try out for the school’s softball program.

"I just love the campus, and everyone there is so nice and friendly and welcoming,” she said. “So I felt it was a good fit for me."

Finch will take his talents south to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Alma College.

"Ever since I started running track or playing soccer, I’ve always thought about, you know, if I could do it at the next level, and what it would take,” he said. “So, I’ve been working with that goal in mind for a long time.”

Finch also plans to try out for Alma’s men’s soccer program in the fall.
