Leland Edges McBain NMC, Munoz Breaks MHSAA Scoring Record

ELK RAPIDS – Propelled by Libby Munoz’s hat trick, the Leland girls soccer team posted a 3-2 win over McBain Northern Michigan Christian in a Division 4 district semifinal at Elk Rapids on Thursday.

With the hat trick, Munoz became the state’s all-time points leader across both boys and girls levels, pushing her career total to 297 points.

"Honestly, I thought it was completely out of reach,” Munoz said. “I wasn’t thinking about it all. I thought it was way too many that I could get in a season, so it didn’t really cross my mind until I started getting close. It’s really exciting to know that I can show that I can score goals, but I can also set people up, so it’s fun to see both aspects of my game pay off."

Munoz surpassed Hudsonville Unity Christian’s Laura Heyboer (290) and Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian’s Aaron Chatfield (296).

The future Kalamazoo College Hornet had already rewritten the girls record book earlier in the season for career goals.

Leland will face host Elk Rapids for the district title Saturday at 6 p.m.
