Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart, Big Rapids Among Contenders at Golf State Finals

EAST LANSING – The Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart boys golf team sits in third place, 11 strokes behind leader Clarkston Everest Collegiate, after the first day of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state finals at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West.

Jake Starry’s 77 led the Irish, who ended the day with a 328.

Harbor Springs sits in 11th with a 363, followed by Frankfort in 12th (366) and defending state champion Suttons Bay in 13th (379).

Qualifying as an individual, Mesick’s Alex Stanton is in 10th after carding a 78, while Ryan Navin from Traverse City St. Francis finished with an 83.

East Jordan’s Logan Smith also shot an 85.

In Division 3 play at MSU’s Forest Akers East, Big Rapids finds itself tied for sixth with a 317, resting 14 strokes behind leader Jackson Lumen Christi.

Houghton Lake is also in ninth place (321), followed by Manistee in 10th (322).

Manistee’s Will Shriver shot a 72 to tie for second individually after the opening day.

Gladwin’s Jonathan Damzyn is tied for fifth after firing a 73, while Shelby’s Keaton Inglis shot a 77.

Tri-County’s Marcus Hall also finished with an 85, while Cheboygan’s Adam Jeannotte carded an 87.

In Division 2 action at Battle Creek’s Bedford Valley, Ludington’s Ethan Leavitt is tied for seventh among top individuals, carding a 73.

Petoskey’s Max Brown also shot a 78, while Mt. Pleasant’s Jack Pilkington finished the day with a 79.
