Korey Mahoney Claims Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions

BOYNE FALLS – Manton’s Korey Mahoney carded a tournament-best round of an eight-under 64 to claim the 25th Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain on Wednesday.

Mahoney, who received an $8,000 payday for the tournament win, entered Wednesday’s final round at four under after shooting a 71 and 69 over the first and second rounds, respectively.

Mahoney got out to a quick start at the Alpine course, shooting five under through the opening six holes.

"When I had that start, I knew I had to just keep going after it, try and get a couple more shots, and really just try and separate myself from the field. I knew my game was good coming in here,” he said. “You know, I wouldn’t have come back to play if I didn’t feel like I could get out there and do something. But to win in that fashion, that’s definitely surprising."

First-round leader Eric Lilleboe of Okemos finished in second at eight under (65-74-69), while Andrew Ruthkoski, Jeff Bronkema and Brian Cairns tied for third at seven under.

Former LPGA Tour pro Elaine Crosby was the top female finisher, shooting a one-over 73 on Wednesday, ending tied for 13th at three under (213).

Traverse City’s Scott Hebert also finished tied for 13th after recording an even round Wednesday.
