Big Rapids Continues Program Turnaround

BIG RAPIDS – Few high school football teams had as big of a turnaround last year as Big Rapids.

Under first-year coach Mike Selzer, the Cardinals went from a one-win team to going 7-4 with a postseason win over Escanaba in a Division 4 pre-district.

Big Rapids surprised many by opening their 2015 campaign with four consecutive wins and finishing third in the Central State Activities Association Gold division behind Reed City and Chippewa Hills.

"You can tell that there is an advancement for our guys with some consistency in the program now, the second year as head coach and the same system,” Selzer said. “Coming from a 0-9 season would be a lot more difficult than a playoff and a playoff win. You know, we still have a tough schedule and we still have to face teams like Chip Hills and Reed City. So they are definitely on our radar as a measuring stick of where we want to be."

Big Rapids opens its season by hosting Cadillac on Aug. 25.
