Chippewa Hills Welcomes in Fremont for “OT on the Road”

REMUS – Fresh off winning its first district championship in program history, the Chippewa Hills football team is continuing its 50th season celebration.

As part of the celebration, Chippewa Hills welcomes back alumni and unveils major upgrades to its stadium Thursday, when the Warriors (1-0) host Fremont (0-1) as our “Overtime on the Road” matchup.

The Chippewa Hills School District just recently completed work on new locker rooms, a new track surface, new lights, a new field drainage system and upgrades to the press box.

“It makes us feel honored that they built this whole facility and we’d be the ones to represent it,” Chippewa Hills senior Billy Koepf said. “We go to different places for breakfast as a team and the people ask us questions about the new facility. Ask us what we think. Ask us always how we’re doing, so it’s awesome to have a community that supports us so much.”

Thursday’s contest marks the first for Fremont in the Central State Activities Association Gold division. The Packers, who make the move from the Lakes Eight Conference, are looking to bounce back from a 39-0 season opening loss to Sparta.

“We think that there’s a lot of good matchups for us in this conference, but you just have to look at it as another game and not really think too much into it,” Fremont senior Cooper Kukal said. “It’s an opponent either way, and you have to try to do what you can do to come out on top.”

Once foes in the now-defunct Western Waterways Activities Conference, Fremont is 7-2 all-time against Chippewa Hills, with the Warriors winning the last meeting in 2007. The Packers have won four of the last five meetings.

“I’d say looking at it like the nearest thing to a playoff team. It’s somebody new that we have not seen yet,” Fremont coach Rick Tank said. “We have a lot of film on them, trying to break down tendencies habits. And again, they’re a quality program.”

After this week, Chippewa Hills returns to the road, visiting Newaygo next Friday, while Fremont hosts Reed City.
