Frankfort Looks to Defend NMFL Legends Title
FRANKFORT – An undefeated conference season and a near win over an eventual state champion in the state quarterfinals signaled the return of Frankfort football in 2015.
Winners of the Northern Michigan Football League Leaders division, the Panthers captured their first district title since 2009 with a win over Onekama before seeing their five-point lead over Muskegon Catholic Central in a Division 8 quarterfinal evaporate midway through the fourth quarter.
“We had a 12-7 lead going into the fourth quarter versus the state champs last year,” coach Matt Stapleton said. “Our kids kind of understand that okay, that’s the level of play, so we know that we have to get better than we were last year if we want to play at that level. But at the same time, we know it’s not that far out of reach.”
The Panthers are looking to repeat as conference champions in 2016 and make an extended stay in the postseason.
“Our goal is to win states. I mean, I’m pretty sure that’s every team’s goal, but definitely everyone needs to work hard,” senior Tige Stockdale said. “Get better every day. Win one game at a time.”
Frankfort opens its season by hosting Manton on Aug. 26.
