MT. PLEASANT – A new era begins for the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart football program this fall.
Jamie Slate takes over the coaching reins from longtime coach Rick Roberts, who retired at the end of the 2015 season after leading the Irish to 164 wins and the 2010 Division 8 state title over 23 years.
Slate is no stranger to the program, though, having served on the Irish staff the previous five seasons.
"We’re still running a lot of Sacred Heart’s everyday, same old plays that we’ve had for the last few years, but we’re definitely putting a new spin on the playbook, and it’s got a whole new look to it,” Slate said.
The biggest adjustment for the Irish is becoming accustomed to a new offensive playbook.
"Everyone’s picked it up pretty quick, so I don’t think that will be a problem, knowing it by day one or week one,” senior Ryan Ervin said.
"It’s definitely a different style of play that we are going into, and I think it’s going to work very well to our personnel that we have,” added senior Ian Ruggles.
The Irish have made eight consecutive postseason appearances and have captured 17 Mid-State Activities Conference championships over the last 23 seasons.
Sacred Heart kicks off the year with its traditional matchup at crosstown rival Beal City.
