TC West Youthful in 2016

TRAVERSE CITY – A youth movement will take the field for the Traverse City West football program this fall.

The Titans graduated 33 players from last year’s squad and are coming off their first losing season since 2009 and only the program’s second since its inaugural year in 1997.

After opening the year with four consecutive losses, West rebounded by winning four of its final five games to carry some momentum into the 2016 season.

“I think this is a great science project, really,” coach Tim Wooer said. “You know, we’ve got a young group with very little experience, but we’ve got incredible attitudes and characters. I’ve always thought that those things will go a long ways, there’s going to be adversity and there’s going to be tough times throughout the season, throughout games. You know, you need those traits to get you through those things as well as in life. I’m excited about that end of it.

“Athletically and physically are we going to have the kids that can match up against some people, I don’t know. But I know that our kids will be gutsy and they won’t quit."

West opens its season at Thirlby Field on Aug. 26, hosting Midland. The Titans also have non-conference games against Grand Haven (Sept. 1), Benton Harbor (Sept. 30) and Coldwater (Oct. 21).
