Trio of Seniors Lead Gaylord St. Mary in 2016

GAYLORD – A young but close-knit group will take to the gridiron for Gaylord St. Mary this fall.

Carrying only three seniors on their roster, the Snowbirds will maneuver their way through a new conference this season after the Ski Valley Conference’s disbandment. St. Mary joins the three-division Northern Michigan Football League and its Legacy division, where it is joined by Inland Lakes, Central Lake, St. Ignace, Johannesburg Lewiston, Harbor Springs and East Jordan.

“Freshmen to seniors, we’re all close,” senior Josh Nowicki said. “It really helps when you’re that close together and you’ve gone to the same school forever. Even the Alba kids, we’ve been together in almost all our school events, homecomings and everything.”

After six consecutive losing seasons, Nowicki and his fellow seniors will look to not only put St. Mary back on a winning track but back in the postseason for the first time since 2009, when the Snowbirds reached the playoffs 10 times in 11 years.

“It’d be pretty amazing,” senior Jerry Coan said. “I’ve never been to the playoffs, so it’d be an awesome feeling just being in the playoffs and then hopefully win in the playoffs if we focus enough and have a good enough team.”

After hosting Atlanta on Aug. 25 to open its season, St. Mary will face Bay City All Saints (Sept. 1) and Mesick (Sept. 16) to wrap up its non-conference slate.
