Watkins, Whitecaps Edge Lake County Captains

COMSTOCK PARK – A solid seven-inning outing from starter Spenser Watkins lifted the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 3-1 win over the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Ballpark on Tuesday.

Spenser allowed just one unearned run on six hits while striking out eight over 7 1/3 innings of work, sowing up West Michigan’s third win in its last four games.

Will Maddox opened the scoring for the Whitecaps (56-46) in the bottom of the first with a single to center field, scoring Derek Hill.

Maddox then drove in the game’s second run and gave West Michigan a 2-0 lead on an RBI single to left field in the third, scoring Hill again.

Cam Gibson’s RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh capped off the scoring for West Michigan.

Shao-Ching Chiang was saddled with the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on nine hits while fanning three over 6 2/3.

The Whitecaps welcome in the Dayton Dragons for a doubleheader on Wednesday.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
