Clare, Harrison Renew Rivalry for “Overtime on the Road”

CLARE – Harrison and Clare renew their county rivalry on Friday in our “Overtime on the Road” matchup as both programs look to gain footing in the Jack Pine Conference race.

The Hornets (2-1, 1-0) ended a four-game losing skid to the Pioneers (2-1, 1-0) a year ago, as Clare’s reign atop the JPC standings was snapped after eight consecutive league titles.

Clare has dominated the rivalry since 2000, playing the victor in 14 of the last 16 years, but Friday’s matchup figures to pair two evenly matched teams.

“Both teams are very good. It’s gonna be a competitive match and everybody in the conference has their eyes on this one,” Clare senior Brandon Zinser said. “You definitely lose sleep over it. You’re always thinking about it, so then just the intensity at practices changes to get you prepared for Friday night.”

After consecutive runner-up finishes in the JPC, Harrison is chasing its first league title since 1999 after posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since registering eight straight from 1993-2000.

“We’ve got to turn it up a little, you know. Definitely concentrate more and stay on track,” Harrison senior James Gillespie said. “We’re hitting the weights this week pretty hard in hopes to come out with a W.

“Clare’s always a good team. They’ve got some nice big guys this year, some real athletes behind the quarterback, and last year we pulled off the win. Hopefully we can make it happen this year.”

A win Friday would put the Pioneers two wins closer to achieving its 11th straight winning season.

Clare hosts Farwell next Friday, while Harrison welcomes in Gladwin.
