Houghton Lake, Roscommon Headline Week 5 of Sports Overtime
ROSCOMMON – Roscommon looks to run its Jack Pine Conference record to 3-0 for the first time since 2006 as it welcomes in rival Houghton Lake for our “Overtime on the Road” matchup on Friday.
Ranked seventh in Division 6, the undefeated Bucks (4-0, 2-0) won last year’s meeting (40-36) in the final minute of regulation to capture their second win their last meetings with the Bobcats.
Houghton Lake (3-1, 2-0) has won three straight after dropping its season opener against Breckenridge (38-29) and has a chance at three conference wins in a season for the first time since 2011.
Friday’s meeting has a “brotherly love” theme, as half-brothers and coaches Joe Holloway (Houghton Lake) and Steve Clements (Roscommon) face off.
Holloway previously coached at Roscommon but departed in 2014, bringing a majority of his staff with him, with the exception of his assistant coach, Clements, who stayed behind and took over the coaching reins.
“I think that there’s a lot of our grandfather in both of us. Our grandfather was a really, really big football fan,” Holloway said. “I think that’s where that passion, that desire came from.”
“I’ve been around the game since I was 10 years old. He (Holloway) did more coaching than we did playing against each other, but I was manager for his football teams growing up,” added Clements.
After tonight’s game, Roscommon visits Gladwin next Friday, while Houghton Lake travels to Harrison.
