Benzie Central Boys, Girls Claim Northwest Conference Titles

MESICK – The Benzie Central boys and girls cross country programs captured Northwest Conference championships at Mesick’s league jamboree on Tuesday.

The Huskies won the boys side of the event with 16 points, followed by Frankfort (63), Glen Lake (68) and Suttons Bay (92). Benzie Central senior Brayden Huddleston finished first in 16:10.31 and was named the conference’s boys overall champion for the third straight season.

On the girls side, Benzie Central won with 15 points, followed by Kingsley (52), Frankfort (94), Glen Lake (101) and Suttons Bay (121). Benzie Central’s Olivia Brian won the race with a time of 19:57.78, while junior teammate Lucy Karpukhno finished second (19:58.90) and captured the girls overall conference championship for the second consecutive year.

Benzie Central placed six runners on boys first-team All-Northwest Conference list, with Huddleston, Hayden Bretzke, Pedro Roman, Nathan Peabody, Jonah Hunt and Max Okros. Glen Lake’s Drake Parker rounded out the list.

On the girls side, the Huskies placed five on the first-team all-conference list, with Karpukhno, Brian, Sierra Pallin, Paige Johnston and Mary Claire Smeltzer. Kingsley’s Bethany McNair and Remmi King rounded out the team.
