Frankfort Shuts Out Charlevoix in Overtime on the Road

CHARLEVOIX – Fifth-ranked Frankfort improved to 8-0 for the first time since 2004 with a 28-0 win over Charlevoix in our “Overtime on the Road” matchup on Friday.

With the win, the Panthers (8-0, 4-0) clinch at least a share of a Northern Michigan Football League Leaders division title.

“Charlevoix kids played real hard. I thought we matched their intensity,” Frankfort coach Matt Stapleton said. “It’s always tough to play on the road but this was a good test for us. I think our kids stepped up. I liked how we finished on defense. We had three opportunities inside the 20 we didn’t score in, so those are things we’re going to have to be working on to make sure we can finish those drives.”

Frankfort junior Griffin Kelly broke open the scoring late in the first quarter on a 65-yard run, putting the Panthers ahead 6-0 after the first.

Kelly then stretched the Frankfort lead to 12 on a 3-yard scamper with 5:09 remaining in the second. Minutes later Daymian Tabbert returned an interception 25 yards for a score, pushing the lead to 20-0 with 4:17 to go before the break.

Kelly would then cap off the scoring with his third touchdown of the night, this time from 85 yards out, giving Frankfort a 28-0 lead at the half.

“Defense was really big tonight, because they have a lot of talented backs, quarterbacks, receivers,” Kelly said. “We had to play with a lot of intensity and speed on the outside. And we had a lot of pressure on the quarterback.”

Frankfort (8-0, 4-0) closes out league play at Onekama next Friday, while Charlevoix (6-2, 2-2) hosts Mesick.
