Leland Preps for Finals Week

LELAND – The Leland volleyball program begins its defense of its Class D state championship this week, looking to make a return trip to Battle Creek and the state semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

The third-ranked Comets are once again paired with Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart in the quarterfinal round. The two programs have met each of the last four years, with Leland dropping just one set in those previous three meetings.

"We talked about this team and what they were going to do to sort of keep the ball in play and that we just needed to invite them to really challenge us and that would be a good thing,” Leland coach Laurie Glass said. “I think one of the things we’ve been doing is being able to serve really aggressively in the places that we want to serve to so that they’re not in their rhythm of their offense and that helps us."

Leland has made quick work of opponents this postseason, dispatching Suttons Bay, Northport and Traverse City Christian in districts before topping Bellaire and No. 9 Forest Area in regionals. In those five matches, the Comets dropped only one set to Suttons Bay in pre-district action.

Tuesday’s winner will face either No. 1 Plymouth Christian or No. 2 Mendon at 3:45 p.m. Friday at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena.
