Shelby Entering Uncharted Territory
SHELBY – The Shelby volleyball team is entering uncharted territory under coach Tom Weirich.
For the first time in their 14 years under Weirich, the Tigers won a regional championship, doing so with a straight-set sweep of Morley Stanwood last Thursday.
With wins over Hesperia, Mason County Central, Holton, Saginaw Valley Lutheran and the previously-mentioned Morley Stanwood, Shelby will now face No. 6 Brown City in a Class C quarterfinal Tuesday at Saginaw Nouvel.
"They do a lot of little things for each other, and they just care about each other which makes it so much more rewarding for them and for me because, the whole season has been a pleasure to coach them and now we’re at the biggest games of the season and playing some of our best volleyball,” Weirich said.
The Tigers said they had a feeling early in the season that this was going to be a special year.
"I knew from the start we had a great team, we have great chemistry and that gets you really far and we hold each other accountable,” Shelby senior Brooke James said. “We pick each other up and it just builds the whole team and makes us flow and play better."
The winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal will meet either Adrian Madison or Allen Park Cabrini at 2 p.m. Thursday.
