TC St. Francis Eyes Lengthy Postseason Run
TRAVERSE CITY – On the heels of its first state finals appearance, the Traverse City St. Francis girls basketball program is eyeing another lengthy postseason as its prepares to open a new season.
Led by multi-sport athlete and all-state forward Juliana Phillips, the Gladiators fell 53-37 to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep in the 2016 Class C title game, capping of their best season in program history.
“You know, we’re all hungry to get back, and that’s definitely a main goal of ours. But I think we have a very different team than we do last year,” Phillips said. “Our first couple games are definitely going to show us where we’re at. I think we’re just really excited to get back out there.”
Having won at least a share of six consecutive Lake Michigan Conference championships, St. Francis begins its title defense on Dec. 13, when it welcomes in East Jordan.
“I think success always hopefully breeds more success,” assistant coach Scott Chouinard said. “Obviously, you have to come in and work hard and start all over. It’s a new season, so nothing’s taken for granted. You have to put in the time and effort to repeat that.”
The Gladiators kick off their season Tuesday, hosting Glen Lake. The two last met in last year’s district final, with St. Francis winning, 62-55.
