Petoskey Boys, Girls Claim BNC Opener

THOMPSONVILLE – After a three-week delay, the Petoskey boys and girls ski programs opened the Big North Conference season by winning a league meet at Crystal Mountain on Tuesday.

On the boys side, the Northmen, who won all five meets a year ago en route to a league title, won Tuesday’s event with 50 points, edging out Traverse City Central by five points. Traverse City West finished third with 103 points, while Cadillac and Gaylord came home in fourth and fifth, respectively, with 116 and 146 points.

Tuesday’s course conditions proved to be less than ideal.

"Usually, we like a really hard platform, so you can move off of it,” Petoskey boys coach Erik Lundteigen said. “Sometimes when its soft the ground gives, the snow gives away a little bit. So, you know, it’s making these athletes better skiers…. I really think that the BNC league is top-to-bottom… it’s strong. We compete against each other every week. So, you know, you ski against good competition, and it makes you better."

In the boys giant slalom, West’s Evan Culp took home first in a time of 39.65, while Petoskey’s Mitch Makela (39.76) and Cadillac’s Alex Netzley (40.47) secured second- and third-place finishes, respectively.

In the slalom race, Makela won the event with a time of 54.19, while teammate Ethan Siegwart (54.99) and Central’s Joe Aulinico (56.93) finished in second and third.

On the girls side, Petoskey held off Central for a five-point win with 54 points, while West took home a third-place finish with 61 points. Cadillac finished in fourth with 134.

Gaylord’s Reagan Olli won the giant slalom (42.49), while Petoskey’s Tai Li Samson (43.13) and Central’s Brittney Collins (43.68) finished in second and third, respectively.

In the slalom race, West’s Hannah Schramski (59.72) crossed the line in first, while Central’s Maddy Zimmerman (1:00.99) and Petoskey’s Loren Kircher (1:01.10) finished second and third.

Central will host the next BNC meet next Tuesday at Schuss Mountain.
