Beaverton’s Johnston Makes History with Win No. 729

BEAVERTON – Roy Johnston earned his 729 win and the Beaverton boys basketball team registered a 61-24 Jack Pine Conference victory over Farwell on Wednesday.

With the victory, Johnston surpasses the legendary Lofton Greene for first on the MHSAA all-time boys basketball coaches wins list. Greene, who led River Rouge to 12 Class B state titles, had established the previous record of 728 career wins in 1984.

"It’s a passion that you have. I can’t explain it,” Johnston said. “You just have a passion, you have to enjoy it. I like working with youth. It keeps me a little younger I think."

The Beavers (11-1, 9-0) were rolling early in Wednesday’s contest, taking a 24-2 lead after the opening quarter and leading 44-16 after three.

Beaverton returns to action Friday, hosting Sanford-Meridian, while Farwell (2-8, 1-6) welcomes in Houghton Lake.
