Gaylord Eyes Return Trip to State Quarterfinals
GAYLORD – On the heels of winning its 10th consecutive district championship, the Gaylord wrestling program is turning its focus to reaching the state quarterfinals for a third straight year.
Having advanced to the Division 2 state semifinals in back-to-back seasons, the fifth-ranked Blue Devils continue their postseason run Wednesday when they face Marquette in a regional semifinal at Petoskey.
"It’s kind of a feather in their cap, a reward for all the hard work and success that they have had throughout the year,” coach Jerry LaJoie said. “You kind of focus on winning conference and then districts and now we move on to regionals."
If Gaylord can get past Marquette, it will likely face third-ranked St. Johns, which squares off against Clio in the semifinal round. Winners of four Division 2 state championships since 2010, St. Johns knocked out the Blue Devils in the state semifinals a year ago.
"We’ve worked pretty hard this year, got a lot of freshman coming in and they’ve really shown up,” said senior Dominic LaJoie, who is ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds.
