Harbor Springs Boys, Girls Win D2 Regional
HARBOR SPRINGS – The Harbor Springs boys and girls ski programs both captured Division 2 regional championships Monday at Nub’s Nob.
The boys team finished with 63 points and ahead of six-time Division 2 state champion Petoskey and Great North Alpine by seven and 12 points, respectively. All three programs qualified for the state meet in two weeks.
Harbor Springs’ Max Sydow and Andrew Truman finished fourth in the giant slalom and slalom, respectively, while Charlevoix’s Brad Klinger and GNA’s Finn Husband won the slalom and giant slalom, respectively.
"I loved the snow, it was nice and grippy, and on the second run, the late line was kind of slippery, and I mean the snow was a little soft, but if you stayed high, I felt like I had a pretty good line, and I was able to stick it,” Husband said.
A co-op of Traverse City St. Francis, Elk Rapids, Central Lake and Grand Traverse Academy, GNA’s Christian Stellin also finished second in the slalom and third in the giant slalom, while Petoskey’s Mitch Makela took second in the giant slalom. David Paquette also finished third for the Northmen in the slalom.
On the girls side, the Rams (60 points) finished ahead of Houghton (96 points) and GNA (114 points). All three programs qualified for the state finals.
Harbor Springs junior Maddy Fuhrman finished first in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom, while Houghton’s Jenna Stein took first and second in the giant slalom and slalom, respectively.
"I wasn’t expecting to win it all, but after the second run, I was like I think I could do it, so then I did way better in the second run, and got it by like a second,” Fuhrmann said.
Fuhrman’s teammate Frannie Kelbel finished third in the giant slalom and fourth in the slalom, while Gaylord’s Reagan Olli took home second- and third-place finishes in the giant slalom and slalom.
Teams and individuals that qualified for the Division 2 state final will compete at Boyne Highlands on Monday, Feb. 27.
