Pine River Eyes First State Title

LEROY – A year ago the Pine River wrestling program pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in state quarterfinal history, becoming the first seventh seed in Division 4 to beat a second seed, when it ended Decatur’s season.

Now the shoe is on the other foot this season as the Bucks prepare for their third consecutive Division 4 state quarterfinal appearance as the second seed.

"It’s really exciting,” Pine River senior Joe Rigling said. “I think this year we really have a shot to go far, and possibly make a state title run."

The Bucks (30-4) will face a seventh-seeded Clinton (28-7) program in a quarterfinal Friday from Central Michigan’s McGuirk Arena.

"Division 4 is like playing a Yahtzee game right now, we hope that we shake out on top, but we had a critical loss in the middle of the year, but we can’t let that bother us, and wherever we go, we’ll wrestle to the best of our ability when we get down there,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said.

Hudson (19-6), Munising (22-3), Bronson (30-8), Springport (17-3), Carson City-Crystal (29-8) and New Lothrop (14-8) are the six other programs competing in Division 4.

Pine River’s quarterfinal bout is set for 4:30 p.m. Friday.
