Sanford Meridian Looks to Make History

SANFORD – With its second district title in three years in hand, the Sanford Meridian wrestling program is now going after history.

The Mustangs, who pulled off a slim 37-34 win over league rival Clare last week for their fourth Division 3 district championship since 2012, can capture the program’s first regional title with a pair of wins Wednesday at Essexville-Garber.

Last week’s win was secured in the final match of the night at 189 pounds, as Paul Streeter was victorious after three overtime periods.

"It was an exact, pretty much copy of the regionals last year between them two, exact same match, ultimate tiebreaker and Paul got away for the win at regionals to go to states,” co-coach Corey Cordero said.

Co-champions of the Jack Pine Conference, Sanford Meridian is finding success this winter with a roster that features two seniors and nine freshmen.

"It’s bracket play from here on out and it’s just like this, it’s matchups on matchups on matchups, and we’re really excited,” co-coach Corey Robinson said.

Sanford Meridian will face Ogemaw Heights. The winner will face either Caro or Beaverton in the regional final.
