St. Ignace Eyes Second Regional Title

ST. IGNACE – With just one senior on its roster, the St. Ignace wrestling program finds itself two wins away from winning its first regional title since 2004 and second in team history.

The Saints captured their third Division 4 district championship since 2013 last week with a narrow 40-36 win over Rogers City. The win marked St. Ignace’s 11th district title in the last 15 years.

“When we beat this team (Rogers City) twice this year, we expect to exceed, we don’t expect to go backwards,” St. Ignace coach Richard Cullen said. “We got one senior out of 13 people, most are freshmen and sophomores. Of those, three or four have been on the mat before. Most coaches ask for 100 percent, some ask for 110 percent, I ask for 111 percent, that one percent we need to be successful."

St. Ignace will face Manistique Wednesday at Munising, with the winner taking on either Munising or Gwinn in the regional final.
