Buckley Readies for Breslin Center

BUCKLEY – An historic season for the Buckley boys basketball team is continuing with the program’s first-ever trip to the Class D state semifinals.

The fourth-ranked Bears (25-0) will face No. 8 Lansing Christian (19-6) at 7:50 p.m. Thursday at Michigan State’s Breslin Center.

Juniors Denver Cade and Austin Harris have Buckley rolling this winter, with Cade averaging 21 points and nearly seven rebounds per game while Harris averages 18.5 pints, 6.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists per contest.

Winners of the Northwest Conference, the Bears posted only two wins by 10 or fewer points. After registering wins over Onekama (69-36), Forest Area (70-27), Hale (69-37) and Suttons Bay (56-37) this postseason, the Bears found themselves trailing by four (25-21) at the half of Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Wyoming Tri-unity Christian before pulling off a 48-37 victory.

As for Buckley’s opponent, Lansing Christian has never appeared in a state title game. After tying for first in the Greater Lansing Activities Conference, the Pilgrims have won five straight, including a 63-45 contest over Benton Harbor Dream Academy in a quarterfinal Tuesday.

The winner of Thursday’s contest will take on the tall task of either dethroning two-time defending state champion and top-ranked Powers North Central (26-0) or three-time champion and second-ranked Southfield Christian (21-5).
