Gaylord Eyes Lengthy Postseason Run in 2017
GAYLORD – After recording a program-best 29 wins a year ago, the Gaylord baseball team is eyeing another historic season in 2017.
With the majority of its lineup intact, Gaylord is looking at duplicating last year’s postseason run.
“This season, we want to win districts and regionals,” senior Jordan Gapinski said. “We want to get just as far and try to get even farther and push farther into the postseason.”
Fourth-year coach John Schneider is turning to his pitching staff and seniors this spring.
A year ago, the Blue Devils handed Big North Conference foes Cadillac and Ogemaw Heights losses in the district postseason before besting Sparta and Fremont, respectively, to win a Division 2 regional championship. A 2-0 defeat to eventual state runner-up Linden in the quarterfinals kept Gaylord from reaching East Lansing.
“Besides just the baseball aspect of it, it was fun,” senior Levi Irish said. “Everybody was getting along and team chemistry has been a big thing for us the past couple years. We really just bonded and that’s one of the reasons we went so far.”
Gaylord opens its season at Frankfort on Tuesday.
