Gaylord Preps to Defend Regional Title

GAYLORD – After capturing a Division 2 regional championship a year ago, the Gaylord girls track and field program enters the 2017 season with many of its top performers returning.

Among the group of returnees from last year’s team that finished ninth at the MHSAA Division 2 state meet is senior Casey Korte. A year ago, Korte captured the Division 2 state title in the long jump and finished fourth in the high jump.

Korte has high expectations for this year’s team.

“It’s cool to see that most of us are back here again,” Korte said. “I guess kind of like our top point-getters are all back together, so I think we definitely can do it again.”

In addition to eyeing a repeat as regional champion, the Blue Devils are also looking to improve upon last year’s runner-up finish to Cadillac in the Big North Conference.

“We have so many leaders and everything,” senior Savannah Krone said. “We know when to be in the weight room, if somebody’s not there, we hold each other accountable. We encourage each other, so I think that our team’s going to be pretty good for regionals and everything.”

Gaylord opens its outdoor season on Thursday, April 6, hosting a Big North tri-meet.
