Ludington Back in State Semifinals

LUDINGTON – The Ludington boys basketball team is making its long-awaited return to the Class B state semifinals.

The eighth-ranked Orioles (24-2) will face River Rouge (24-1) at 7:50 p.m. Friday at Michigan State’s Breslin Center. It marks Ludington’s first semifinal appearance since 1971.

Winners of the Lakes 8 Activities Conference, Ludington has posted six straight victories since ending its regular season with a 49-46 loss to North Muskegon on March 2. The Orioles have outscored their six postseason opponents by an average of 24 points per contest, including a 69-43 win over Lake Fenton on Tuesday in a quarterfinal.

The Orioles are tasked with facing one of the most storied Class B programs in the state. Although seeking its first state championship since 1999, River Rouge has amassed 14 Class B state championships and five runner-up finishes. River Rogue handed Williamston a 54-51 loss Tuesday in quarterfinal action and has reached the Breslin Center with relative ease, beating its five postseason opponents by an average of 24 points per game.

Friday’s winner will face either New Haven (25-1) or Benton Harbor (22-3) Saturday evening for the state title.
