Sanford Meridian, Coleman Split Doubleheader

SANFORD – The Sanford Meridian baseball team opened its season Wednesday with a two-game split against Coleman.

The Mustangs opened with a 5-4 victory before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening inning and took a 4-0 lead to the third, when Coleman plated three runs.

Sanford Meridian added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, with Coleman cutting the deficit to one with run in the fifth.

Hunter Merillatt struck out 10 over four innings for Sanford Meridian (1-1).

Spencer Pnacek and Tayven Cottrell led Coleman with two hits and an RBI each, with Pnacek striking out three over three innings of work on the mound.

In the nightcap, Tyler Germain earned the win for Coleman (1-2).

Jason Beckner tallied two hits to lead the Comets, while Cottrell went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a stolen base.

Sanford Meridian returns to the diamond at Midland Dow on Tuesday, April 11, while Coleman hosts league foe Merrill.
