Elk Rapids Edges TC Liberty on Penalty Kicks

TRAVERSE CITY – The Division 4 sixth-ranked Elk Rapids girls soccer recorded a 3-2 (4-3) shootout win over the Traverse City Liberty in Lake Michigan Conference action on Monday.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 at the half after goals from the Liberty’s Emily Mackey and Elk Rapids’ Nikki Hayes.

Early in the second half, the Elk’s Maran Huggins gave Elk Rapids a one-goal lead before Maddy Wierda responded by converting a penalty kick for the Liberty.

Cailey Wagner’s goal in the shootout lifted Elk Rapids to the win, as Drew Antcliff recorded two saves in the shootout.

The Liberty (3-4-2, 1-2) are back on the pitch Wednesday, hosting league foe Kalkaska, while Elk Rapids (5-1-1, 3-1) welcomes in No. 3 Harbor Springs on Thursday.
