Gaylord’s Edwards Named LSSU’s Female Athlete of the Year
SAULT STE. MARIE – Gaylord native and senior guard Mackenzie Edwards has been named Lake Superior State’s Deb McPherson Female Athlete of the Year Award winner.
Edwards is joined by senior men’s golfer Joe Ericson, who was named the Cliff Everett Male Athlete of the Award winner on Thursday at the school’s annual athletics banquet and inaugural “ESPYs” ceremony.
An accounting major, Edwards twice led the women’s basketball team in scoring and finished her career this winter ranked 19th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,087 career points and set a program-record with 182 3-point field goals made. Edwards averaged 13.6 points per game during the 2016-17 season an earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors in 2016. She also was named a GLIAC Academic Excellence Award winner three times.
During the ceremony, presented by the LSSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a tribute was held for Sault Ste. Marie native and outgoing LSSU Director of Athletics Kris Dunbar. Dunbar was recently named the GLIAC Commissioner.
