Homegrown Trio Enjoying Time with Whitecaps
As the West Michigan Whitecaps open their 2017 season Friday, the Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers will have a trio of homegrown players on their opening day roster.
Back for a second season with West Michigan is outfielder Cam Gibson, a Michigan State alum and son of Tigers legend Kirk Gibson.
Gibson is joined by another former Spartan this spring in the form of infielder Blaise Salter, and former University of Michigan pitcher Trent Szkutnik. Salter and Gibson are both 2015 draft selections, while Szkutnik was drafted by Detroit in 2014.
"I’m in West Michigan. I love West Michigan,” Gibson said. “I love, love the guys on my team, good team chemistry."
Playing in their home state in front of family and friends is special for the trio.
“Just to be here, and be in my home state and stuff, and be here with guys I grew up with like Cam, and I grew up playing against Trent and stuff,” Salter said. “For it to come full circle with it, and we’re all at the same spot now, playing in Grand Rapids, a great city. Especially with the fan base, like I said, really, really excited to play this year."
The Whitecaps continue their four-game series with the South Bend Cubs Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
