Kalkaska’s Vandergriff Reflects on Coaching Milestone
KALKASKA – It was two years ago that Kalkaska baseball coach Bill Vandergriff joined an exclusive club by coaching in his 1,000th high school game in Michigan.
This spring, the longtime Kalkaska skipper added another milestone to his already impressive resume.
With a non-league doubleheader sweep of Kingsley in early April, Vandergriff earned his 700th career win.
In reaching the milestone, the Kalkaska graduate heard from many former student-athletes whose lives he touched.
"I had some calls, in between the games, from some dear friends, and one of my best friends, Dave Dalton, showed up, and a lot of kids came from back downstate, college days, and came to witness it, so that was pretty cool,” Vandergriff said. “You know, you never set out, I don’t think, as a coach in any sport to try to achieve something like that, but it was pretty exciting."
Since sweeping Kingsley, Vandergriff has already run his win total up to 704 and will look to add to that against East Jordan on Thursday.
