UNC Tops Gonzaga to Claim 6th NCAA Championship

Joel Berry scored a game-high 22 points and the University of North Carolina captured the NCAA Tournament championship with a 71-65 win over Gonzaga on Monday at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

It is the sixth NCAA Tournament championship for the Tar Heels (33-7) and first since 2009.

The Bulldogs (38-1) led 35-32 at the half and 65-63 with a 1:53 remaining in regulation before the Tar Heels ended the contest on an 8-0 run.

Justin Jackson tallied 16 points for North Carolina, while Isaiah Hicks chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Nigel Williams-Gross led Gonzaga with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Josh Perkins had 13 points.

Monday’s championship game was the first for Gonzaga.

The game marked the eighth time two No. 1 seeds played in a NCAA Tournament championship game.
