Big Rapids Eyes 1st State Title Since 2008

The Big Rapids boys golf team wants to swing past last year’s third-place state finish and end this season atop Division 3.

With that ultimate goal in mind, sophomore Pierce Morrissey says, “Since we fell short last year, it motivates us and pushes us to get to the level where our game needs to be.”

One strength that keeps the boys driving to the finish is the bond they share with one another.

Pierce’s older brother, a senior, Tait Morrissey says, “When one person doesn’t have the greatest day, another person can pick up where that person left off.”

Another thing that keeps the Cardinals going is their mission to make it to this year’s Division 3 state finals.

They say with the weather just now warming up, they have a long way to go, and a lot to work on before June, but something to look forward to is the possibility of home course advantage.

Though the Cardinals are currently ranked second, junior Ben Fath says, “We’re not where we want to be yet, but when state finals come, we’ll be ready to play.”

This year on June 9 and June 10, the Division 3 state finals will be held at the Cardinals’ very own Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

This is the only school in northern Michigan to host an MHSAA state finals event this school year.

Looking forward to community support, Coach Mark Posey says, “It will be special to have a lot of fans out, a lot of high school kids. It will be great for them to get out and make their banners and their signs, and I certainly hope that it spurs them on to a state championship.”

Katke Golf Course is also the home course for the Ferris State men’s and women’s golf teams.
