LSSU Hockey Announces 2017 Spring Class

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Lake Superior State hockey program has announced its 2017 spring recruiting class.

The recruiting class includes five defensemen, two forwards and three goaltenders.

Sault Ste. Marie native Ashton Calder and Niko Esposito (Fairbault, Minn.) are two forwards highlighting the spring signing class. A former member of the Soo Indians midget AAA program, Calder spent the 2016-17 season with the Minnesota Wilderness of the North American Hockey League and the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League. Calder tallied 42 points on 22 goals and 20 assists.

Esposito is the grandson of NHL hall of famer Phil Esposito and spent his 2016-17 season with the Shattuck St. Mary’s prep program, recording 60 points on 25 goals and 35 assists.

William Riedell (Greensboro, N.C.), Tyler Anderson (Niverville, Manitoba), Steven Ruggiero (Kings park, N.Y.), Lukas Kaelble (Mannheim, Germany) and Chase Pilawski (Lutz, Fla.) signed National Letters of Intent as a defensemen, while Roman Bengert (Cole Harbor, N.S.), Mareks Mitens (Ventspids, Latvia) and Jack Robbel (Bloomington, Minn.) represent the trio of goalies signed.

The recruiting class also includes forwards Chase Gamelin, a Sault Ste. Marie native, Matthew Barnaby (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Robert Bluegers (Riga, Lativa), as well as defensemen Patrick Kyte (Pembroke, Ont.) and Michael Mannara (Woodbridge,. Ont.), who signed last fall.
