TC Liberty Welcomes Littlest Fan
TRAVERSE CITY – Carissa Funk came into the spring ready to take over the coaching reins of the Traverse City Liberty girls soccer program and lead the team to its second straight district championship.
Funk had to alter her plans just weeks into her first season, though, but for a good reason.
Just a little more than three weeks ago, Funk gave birth to a baby boy but returned to the sidelines just 12 days later.
"This group of girls, I couldn’t have asked for more,” Funk said. “They give you everything, and they care about you as a person. I couldn’t wait to get back to them. So, as soon as I felt well enough, and I knew I could come out to this game, because it was warm enough, I was like, ‘I’m there.’
"My whole pregnancy, you know, they’re carrying everything for me, and giving me everything that they can on the field before I leave. I couldn’t wait to get back to them."
Despite having a roster loaded with underclassmen, Funk’s three-week absence didn’t faze the liberty, as they posted three wins under new charges.
"We had some coaches step in and take over, and actually it was an easy flow between coaches,” senior Delin Kanitz said.
The Liberty return to the pitch Friday for a non-league contest at Glen Lake.
